Prepping the Skin for Tan

Posted by Ann McNelis on

Some simple skin regimes mean you can have a natural look when applying fake tan. Prepping the skin avoids build ups in dryer areas like the knees, elbows and ankles.

Exfoliate

The first step to prepare is to exfoliate the skin completely. Exfoliating mitts are great as they are inexpensive, reusable and will remove dead skin leaving skin soft and supple. They are fantastic for removing tan around troublesome areas where tan can build up. If you prefer body scrubs, my favourite is the Thalgo® Exotic Island Body Scrub; it’s unique blend leaves the skin soft and velvety and it smells heavenly (ask for more details in Whelehans). I wouldn’t recommend using scrubs like this on the day of tan application as the oils can act as a barrier when applying; scrubs are perfect to prep the skin a few days beforehand.

Dry brushing

Dry brushing is an alternative to using mitts or scrubs. A natural bristled brush can be used daily in long quick strokes over the body (avoiding the face). It will assist our skins’ natural exfoliating process by shedding dead skin cells and stimulate blood circulation that can help reduce cellulite, rejuvenate skin cells and improve the tone and texture of the skin. This will allow your skin to absorb the tan easier and avoid streaks from dead skin build up.

Shaving

We all love that smooth look and feel. To ensure longevity of your tan, shave the likes of your legs the day before tan application. If you shave just before applying, it can result in a dimply effect where the tan sticks to the open pores. If you shave straight after tanning, the colour often flakes off leaving the appearance of blotchy or patchy skin.

What to avoid after applying tan

Lastly avoid body lotions, creams or deodorants which can prevent tan adhering to the skin. For best results, refrain from using any of these until the day after application. The skin should be completely dry and product free for the perfect glowing tan.
