Applying makeup is very personal; we all have our own techniques but a few tips I have picked up over the year may be of some help:
Applying your foundation with a brush provides better coverage and makes blending out your foundation a dream. In Whelehans we have Real Techniques® brushes which are brilliant for foundation application. A common mistake I used to make as a beginner was wearing the wrong shade of foundation; mismatched foundation can look very unnatural and obvious. To avoid this get a few samples of the foundation you wish to try or get the sales attendant to colour match you in store. When checking the foundation colours, apply to your jawline and not the back of your hand.
Mascara opens up your eyes and can make you look more awake. Over applying mascara can cause the eyelashes to clump together and look like spiders legs. Avoid clumping be only applying 2 – 3 coats of mascara and wiggle the mascara brush at the base of your lashes to add volume.
If you are a beginner then eyeshadow can be overwhelming…. so many colours, so many finishes, loose and pressed shadows….where do you start?? I recommend sticking with neutral shadows like browns, taupe and creams. I recommend going with matte shadows (warm and cool tone browns) for the crease of your eye and if you want to add colour to the lid, stick with golds and bronzes. Neutral shadows are the easiest to work with, they are less scary than a bright purple and once you feel more confident with eye makeup then add in some colour.
Bronzer is amazing at warming up your completion, however do not go crazy with the bronzing brush as you can over-apply and end up looking very muddy. To achieve that “bronze goddess” look, apply bronzer to the top of your forehead, around the temples and under the cheekbones. I love the Elizabeth Arden Bronzing Duo® as it gives a lovely glow to the face.
I love my brow products and they are one of the first products I recommend to a beginner. To avoid “sharpy brows”, stick with a brow powder like the Catrice Brow Duo®; it’s affordable and easy to use. Brows finish of your makeup look and stick with a colour two shades darker than your hair colour to keep them looking natural.
