When to throw out your makeup?

Posted by Trish Wallace on

You wouldn’t eat something that has been sitting in your fridge for years, so why put it on your skin? 2016 has well and truly been the year for bold statement makeup and as one of your New Year’s resolutions, I have the low down on when it’s time to say goodbye to your makeup must haves.

Eyeliners and Mascaras – You really should chuck out your mascara and liquid liners every 3 months. Those little tubes are a breeding ground for bacteria and eye infections are not a good look on anyone! Eye pencils are a little more forgiving once you sharpen them before every use!

Eyeshadows, blushers, bronzers and highlighters – generally you get the longest out of powdered makeup because there is no moisture or oil in them, but after 2 years, if you even have any left, I would toss it out. Most powders start to cake and change colour from use, effecting the overall pigment.

Concealer and Foundation – you could get a year out of your foundation, depending on how regularly you wear makeup, but if you use your fingers, or don’t wash your brushes, bacteria will fester in your foundation and cause breakouts and irritated skin!

Lipgloss and Lipsticks – 6 months to a year, usually the preservatives in these break down and separate, leaving you with a mix of oil and water… not a good look.

Don’t forget to regularly wash your brushes with a mild shampoo and air dry to get the most out of your makeup!
